(Bloomberg) -- Nexperia Holding BV, a Dutch chipmaker owned by Shanghai-listed Wingtech Technology Co., will invest $200 million to develop and manufacture semiconductors at its Hamburg production facility.

The company intends to build production lines for chips made of silicon carbide and gallium nitride at the site over the next two years, Nijmegen-based Nexperia said in a statement on Thursday. Such chips are particularly energy-efficient, leading to more compact and powerful electronic devices, it said.

Nexperia was acquired by Wingtech for 25.2 billion yuan ($3.5 billion) in 2018.

The investment comes after Wingtech has faced regulatory hurdles when attempting to acquire chip producers in Europe, amid a US-led push to limit Chinese advances in the semiconductor industry.

In 2022, the UK ordered it to undo the purchase of Newport Wafer Fab due to national security issues. Last year, the Netherlands probed Nexperia’s acquisition of chip firm Nowi Energy BV. That deal later won approval.
