(Bloomberg) -- China appointed veteran official Han Jun as the Communist Party chief at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, according to a government statement.

The appointment may pave the way for Han to become the agriculture minister. China is yet to to name a replacement for former minister Tang Renjian, who is under investigation by the anti-graft agency for “serious violations” of the law.

With a doctoral degree in agriculture economy, Han has previously served various official positions related to the sector, including as vice agriculture minister and a director at the General Office of the Central Rural Work Leading Group.

Han was most recently party secretary of Anhui province, a position he has held for a little over a year. He has been a main advocate for agriculture supply-side reform, part of the country’s efforts to overhaul the sector.
