(Bloomberg) -- Amazon.com Inc. is expanding digital medical consultations to its employees across the U.S. and says it will start offering the service to other companies later this year.

Amazon Care started as a pilot for employees in and around the company’s Seattle headquarters, offering virtual and in-person medical services. As of Wednesday, Amazon started offering the service to other Washington-based companies, Amazon said in a blog post. This summer, the company will start offering Amazon Care to the rest of its employees in the U.S., as well as other companies.

Shares of Teladoc Health Inc. fell about 7% in early trading, and American Well Corp. was down about 4%. Amazon was mostly unchanged.

Health care has long been seen as a target for Amazon, both to reduce the costs to care for the online retail giant’s fast-growing employee base, and as a potential source of revenue in a new area that some say is ripe for digital transformation. Its first big splash in heath care, a joint venture with Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. to explore novel ways to reduce health care costs, announced in January that it would end its operations.

Meanwhile, Amazon has been steaming ahead with its own initiatives. The company late last year launched online pharmacy services in the U.S. under its own brand, building on PillPack, a mail-distribution pharmacy the company acquired.
