Finnish Customs Probes Illegal Import of Whale Meat From Norway

(Bloomberg) -- Finnish customs officials have investigated illegal imports of minke whale meat, a prohibited item, from Norway.

In 2022, about 36,000 kilograms (79,366 pounds) of whale meat were imported to Finland for use as food for sled dogs, according to an emailed statement. The common minke whale is covered by an international convention known as CITES, as well as Finnish legislation on importing whale meat.

Five people have been interviewed in connection with a case that centers on aggravated nature conservation and customs clearance offenses. Finnish prosecutors are weighing charges.
