(Bloomberg) -- EDP SA said it started construction of the Harrington Franklin battery project in the UK as the Portuguese utility invests in energy storage across different markets.
The project, located in Kent, will have capacity of 50 megawatts and is expected to be fully operational by 2025, Lisbon-based EDP said in an email. The company said it has also secured another 50 megawatt storage project in the UK, as well as a project in Spain with capacity of 36 megawatts.
EDP aims to reach storage capacity of more than 500 megawatts worldwide, including in the US, according to its business plan for the 2023-2026 period.
For EDP, Europe and North America are the main regions for developing new wind farms and solar energy plants. Battery projects can help store excess renewable energy and make it available later when needed.
