Finland Court Upholds Detention for Tanker That Broke Cables

(Bloomberg)

(Bloomberg) -- Finland is allowed to keep detained the shadow-fleet tanker that damaged a power link and four data cables in the Baltic Sea last week, a court ruled.

The tanker, Eagle S, was detained by the police on Dec. 28 and seabed investigations have uncovered extensive signs the vessel was dragging its anchor when the damage occurred. It’s the third incident in just over a year in which a ship anchor has ruptured underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.

The Helsinki District Court on Friday rejected a petition from United Arab Emirates’ shipping company Caravella LLC to end the detainment, according an emailed response to questions.

The vessel, sailing under the Cook Islands flag, has been identified as a member of the so-called shadow fleet transporting Russian petroleum products, and is now detained at a port in southern Finland. It’s under investigation for aggravated criminal mischief and aggravated interference of communications.
