(Bloomberg) -- New Yorkers were treated to a white Christmas Eve as light snow fell across the city, but most of it will melt away by Wednesday morning, forecasters said.
“It’ll coat things and make it pretty, but it won’t stick around for long,” said Tony Fracasso, a meteorologist with the US Weather Prediction Center.
Less than an inch (2.5 centimeters) fell in the city, and with a forecast high of 37F (2.8C) Tuesday in Central Park, Fracasso expected the snow to disappear by evening. “It’ll maybe stick around in the shadows, but I wouldn’t count on it,” he said.
No major travel impacts from the snow were reported. Christmas Day should bring New York sunshine and high temperatures just above freezing, according to the National Weather Service.
In contrast, a series of strong storms are expected to strike the West Coast this week, bringing rain, mountain snow and dangerous surf. High waves in advance of a storm battered part of the Northern California coast Monday, collapsing 150 feet of the Santa Cruz Wharf, a pier lined with shops and restaurants, officials said at a briefing.
Also Monday, a man was found trapped under wave-tossed debris at a beach and was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department. And about 15 miles to the south, another man was missing after witnesses saw him pulled into the water.
