(Bloomberg) -- Swedish police found no evidence that four deaths of Swedish battery maker Northvolt AB’s staff had been caused by exposure to any hazardous substances.
Authorities probed the deaths of three employees of the Skelleftea plant, all of whom died at home, while a fourth person was found to have drowned. The police’s overall assessment is that there is no suspicion of crime related to the deaths, according to a statement on Monday.
Northvolt, which filed for bankruptcy protection in the US last month, has been under scrutiny for health and safety conditions after several reported accidents at its Skelleftea plant. In 2023, another two workers died at the factory after suffering accidents.
“We hope that this can lead to closure for colleagues and for the families of our colleagues,” a company spokesperson said in an email. “We hope it will put an end to the speculations and rumors.”
The company also said Northvolt’s ambition is to improve its safety statistics, which are “in line” with the Swedish average.
