NJ Transit CEO Corbett to Resign After Seven Years

(Bloomberg) -- New Jersey Transit Chief Executive Officer and President Kevin Corbett will step down from his position next month after nearly seven years at the helm of one of the largest public transit providers in the nation.

Corbett said in a Monday letter viewed by Bloomberg that he accepted a new opportunity with one of the “prestigious universities” in the state. He will leave the agency effective Jan. 15. The letter, addressed to New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner Francis O’Connor, said Corbett’s new position will provide an opportunity to remain connected to the transportation sector.

The New Jersey Globe first reported Corbett’s departure. A spokesperson for Governor Phil Murphy, who was also included on the letter, confirmed the resignation. Corbett didn’t immediately reply to an email message seeking comment.

The departure comes after several major service disruptions this year that left riders with hours-long commutes. Corbett, Murphy and Amtrak Chief Executive Officer Stephen Gardner, are working to mitigate future issues for commuters traveling in and out of New York City.

“Kevin has worked in coordination with our federal government, Amtrak, and our Legislature to develop strategic plans and solutions that address commuters’ concerns and position NJ TRANSIT for long-term reliability and success,” said Governor Murphy in a Monday statement.

Corbett will remain at the agency in a consultative capacity for an additional 30 days to ensure a smooth transition for his successor, according to the letter.
