(Bloomberg) -- Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell fell Tuesday and cut his face, but a colleague said he is “fine” after receiving medical attention.
McConnell “tripped following lunch. He sustained a minor cut to the face and sprained his wrist,” said Doug Andres, the senator’s spokesman. “He has been cleared to resume his schedule.”
Senator John Thune, who will take over the party leadership post in January, said moments after the fall that McConnell is “fine.”
Emergency medical personnel were seen entering McConnell’s office and then leaving. McConnell didn’t accompany them.
McConnell, 82, was hospitalized in March 2023 after falling at a fundraiser and suffering a concussion and broken rib. He didn’t return to the Senate until mid-April.
That fall and at least two episodes later that year in which he abruptly froze and stared ahead for extended intervals raised questions about his health.
McConnell, who is the longest-serving party leader in the Senate’s history, decided not to seek reelection to his leadership position in November. He has said he will serve out his Senate term, which runs through 2026.
McConnell was stricken with polio at age 2 and has a moderate limp.
