Chinese Vessel Linked to Broken Baltic Sea Data Cables Sails Off

(Bloomberg) -- The Chinese vessel linked to last month’s data-cable breakages in the Baltic Sea has set sail after investigations on board and is heading out of the Danish straits.

Yi Peng 3, the bulk carrier that’s sat for several weeks near Danish waters, set off on Saturday, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Just two days ago, representatives from Sweden, Finland and Germany accompanied Chinese officials to board the China-registered ship that was potentially involved in what may be undersea cable sabotage in the Baltic Sea last month.

A high-speed fiber optic cable connecting Finland and Germany was cut in mid-November by what was likely an external impact, while a nearby link between Lithuania and Sweden was also damaged. Yi Peng 3 was in the vicinity of the two cables when it happened. Officials have confirmed no firm link between the ship and the incidents.

“We are still in the midst of these investigations,” Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told reporters earlier on Saturday. Speaking in Saariselka, in the far north of Finland, the premier said his government is “extremely concerned.”

“We don’t believe things just happen,” Kristersson said. “Now the question is whether this was intentional or if it was an accident.”
