(Bloomberg) -- A small plane crashed in the Brazilian city of Gramado, in the southern Rio Grande do Sul state, according to local authorities. The state’s governor, Eduardo Leite, said in a post on X that the accident caused 10 deaths, all of them of them passengers, and 17 injuries on the ground.
Luiz Cláudio Galeazzi, 61, chief executive officer at corporate restructuring firm Galeazzi & Associados, was one of the accident’s victims, Leite said at a news conference. The businessman’s wife, three children and other family members also died, as did Bruno Cardoso Munhoz Guimarães, a director at the company, according to a post from the firm’s LinkedIn account.
Among those injured on the ground, five were given medical attention and discharged, while 12 remain under care, two in serious condition, Leite said.
According to the state government, the airplane took off from the nearby city of Canela and was headed to Jundiaí city, in the state of São Paulo. The plane collided with the chimney of a building and then with the second floor of a house, before crashing into a furniture store.
Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that the country’s air force is investigating the causes of the accident.
Gramado is a popular tourist destination and usually receives many visitors during the Christmas season.
